Home / Fellowships / BHS Sponsored Fellowships

We are proud to introduce our BHS sponsored travelling fellowship program for 2026. We invite applications from BHS members for the opportunity to travel, learn and develop their clinical practice in hip surgery for the benefit of our patients and organisations.

Please see below details of fellowships including eligibility criteria, application details and deadlines.

All applications with supporting documentation must be emailed to Emma Johnson at admin@britishhipsociety.com

Interviews will take place at the BHS Annual Scientific Meeting 18th to 20th March 2026 at London Olympia. Virtual online interviews are possible for those unable to attend in person.

Applications are now CLOSED.

Named to honour the significant contributions, and to preserve the legacy of Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD and Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, The Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship is open to four orthopaedic surgeons from North America (USA and Canada) and throughout the world. Once selected, the traveling fellows visit up to ten sites in North America.

The host sites structure the fellows’ visits to include personal interactions, conferences, surgical observations, tours of research facilities and cadaver labs.

The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to offer young surgeons an inspirational tour of state-of-the-art centres providing exemplary surgical care of the hip joint throughout North America.

Travel will take place in November-December of 2026, will continue for 4-5 weeks throughout the United States and Canada, and will culminate at CCJR® 2026 in Orlando, Florida.

Eligibility Criteria

Must be a British Hip Society member.

Must have FRCS (Tr&Orth) and be on the specialist register.

Must be within the first 10 years of consultant practice in the specialty of hip surgery (having completed a fellowship in arthroplasty, young adult and/or sports surgery).

Must have exhibited interest in clinical or laboratory research and able to demonstrate documented interest in advancing hip surgery through research as evidenced by publications and presentations.

Must be able to be away from home/practice on a 4-5-week tour in November-December 2026, and able to obtain an entry visa(s) for the United States and Canada. The Hip Society (US) will provide a letter of invitation upon request to selected Fellows.

Health Information / Requirements

Proof of acceptable vaccination will be required for, including but not limited to, Hepatitis B, flu, MMR, varicella, Tdap.  Proof of a negative TB test and/or a full chest Xray also may be required.  All candidates must be willing and able to obtain the necessary documentation ahead of travel.

Items Needed for Your Application

1. An updated CV with details of your education, training, research and employment

2. A recent headshot in digital format

3. Two strong letters of recommendation from BHS members

4. A well-written personal statement.

Application Process

Applications are now CLOSED.

Applications are invited for BHS members only and must be made directly to the BHS (see below for application details).

The deadline for applications for 2027 will be announced in due course.

This fellowship is a partnership of The Hip Society and British Hip Society and provides an exceptional exchange opportunity to two outstanding candidates from the United States and/or Canada and two candidates from the UK.

Successful candidates will travel throughout the United Kingdom for a period of three to four weeks and will be hosted by world-renowned experts in adult hip reconstruction.

The program will include opportunities for scientific exchange, operating theatre observations, close interaction with faculty, as well as social and cultural events.

Applicants should be members of the British Hip Society and be a Consultant or a post CCT fellow at the time of application.  The fellowship will run from 1st September 2026 culminating at the British Orthopaedic Conference in London Olympia 22nd to 24th September 2026. The applicants should confirm that they will be able to commit to attending the full period of the fellowship (weekends will be mostly free from academic and clinical activity, and fellows can return to family if they need to do so).

Social and networking activities will be organised by the host centers for those who wish to join those – confirmation of plans will be required in advance.

Interviews will take place at the BHS Annual Scientific Meeting, 18-20th March 2026, London Olympia (virtual online interview possible).

We are pleased to announce the creation of a new educational offering - The Robin Ling Travelling Fellowship, created in honour of one of the co-founders of the British Hip Society. There was a recognition that most educational offerings from the BHS are aimed, quite appropriately, at medical students, residents and consultants in their early years of practice.

Robin Ling was a remarkable surgeon and individual, and along with humility, one of his greatest attributes was a desire to understand problems rather than accept them and to never stop learning. With this in mind – ‘never stop learning’ - we are introducing this new travelling fellowship aimed at those at a more advanced stage of their consultant career. We have purposefully not included a minimum age or level of experience for this fellowship but hope that more established surgeons would feel able to apply and to use the funds to gain more experience or knowledge in their chosen area of sub-speciality practice.

We are grateful to have the support of the Ling family, the Devon Orthopaedic Charitable Trust, and the British Hip Society and will offer an annual fellowship of £4000. We are inviting applications from BHS members for one fellowship post. Please do consider how this could benefit you and help you develop your practice.

Application Requirements:

1) Covering letter with a personal statement and detailed Summary of your fellowship plans

2) Up to date copy of your CV

3) Two letters of reference from Consultant BHS members

4) Estimated Budget

Application deadline: 1st February 2026
