Please contact the Member at large: mal@britishhipsociety.com if you need further information.

Fellowships will be announced annually with interviews held at the annual meeting. Interviews can be over zoom if applicants unable to attend the meeting.

Named to honour the significant contributions, and to preserve the legacy of Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD and Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, The Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship is open to four orthopaedic surgeons from North America (USA and Canada) and throughout the world. Once selected, the traveling fellows visit up to ten sites in North America.

The host sites structure the fellows’ visits to include personal interactions, conferences, surgical observations, tours of research facilities and cadaver labs.

The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to offer young surgeons an inspirational tour of state-of-the-art centres providing exemplary surgical care of the hip joint throughout North America.

Travel will take place in November-December of 2026, will continue for 4-5 weeks throughout the United States and Canada, and will culminate at CCJR® 2026 in Orlando, Florida.

Must have FRCS (Tr&Orth) and be on the specialist register.

Must be within the first 10 years of consultant practice in the specialty of hip surgery (having completed a fellowship in arthroplasty, young adult and/or sports surgery).

Must have exhibited interest in clinical or laboratory research and able to demonstrate documented interest in advancing hip surgery through research as evidenced by publications and presentations.

Must be able to be away from home/practice on a 4-5-week tour in November-December 2026, and able to obtain an entry visa(s) for the United States and Canada. The Hip Society (US) will provide a letter of invitation upon request to selected Fellows.

Application Process

Applications for a British Hip Society (BHS) sponsored place on the Rothman-Ranawat Fellowship 2026 are now CLOSED.

Applications are invited for BHS members only and must be made directly to the BHS (see below for application details).

The deadline for applications for 2027 will be announced in due course.

This fellowship is a partnership of The Hip Society and British Hip Society and provides an exceptional exchange opportunity to two outstanding candidates from the United States and/or Canada and 2 candidates from the UK.

Successful candidates will travel throughout the United Kingdom for a period of three to four weeks and will be hosted by world-renowned experts in adult hip reconstruction.

The program will include opportunities for scientific exchange, operating theatre observations, close interaction with faculty, as well as social and cultural events.

Applicants should be members of the British Hip Society and be a Consultant or a post CCT fellow at the time of application. The applicants should confirm that they will be able to commit to attending the full period of the fellowship (weekends will be mostly free from academic and clinical activity, and fellows can return to family if they need to do so).

Social and networking activities will be organised by the host centers for those who wish to join those – confirmation of plans will be required in advance.

The British Hip Society (BHS) and Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) are offering a full-time, 2-year research fellowship of up to £115k, to start by no later than August 2026.

The focus of this year’s BHS/ORUK Research Fellowship is to invite researchers to develop applications that are aligned with the missions of the society “to promote the very best care for patients with hip related conditions”. In particular, we welcome applications that address this year’s theme of ‘inequality of access to healthcare’ in hip surgery.

The successful candidate will be expected to register for study towards a higher degree (MD, PhD, DPhil or equivalent) from a UK University. This will require a leave of absence from clinical roles and / or training with agreement of employers or training programme directors.
