Welcome to the October BHS newsletter!
This month, we reflect on the highly successful BOA meeting in Birmingham, where sessions covered peri prosthetic fractures, the young adult hip, and the launch of the new “Take a Break” podcast from the Culture and Diversity committee. The podcast series began with an engaging interview with Mobeen Quarashi, who took a break from his Orthopaedic training to compete in the BBC’s Race Across the World. We also enjoyed a dynamic “silent disco” free paper session, expertly chaired by Matt Wilson and Kate Gill.
A highlight of the BOA meeting was the Charnley Memorial Lecture, delivered by Professor Rob Trousdale of the Mayo Clinic, who shared insights from three decades of performing total hip arthroplasty. Fellowship appointments were also announced, with Owen Diamond, Isabelle Cochrane, and Marieta Franklin receiving prestigious positions.
Looking ahead to 2025, we encourage members to save the dates for the BHS Annual Scientific Meeting in Harrogate from March 5th-7th. Abstract submissions are open, and we’re seeking members to help review abstracts and chair sessions. In addition, we are calling for nominations for key roles within the BHS executive committee.
Don’t miss the latest BHS-supported research surveys, webinars, and our collaboration with the Mayo Clinic. Lastly, we highlight an important coroner’s report on hip surgery, urging early discussions on local anaesthetic practices.
