President’s Update – August 2024

On behalf of The British Hip Society, I am pleased to share the latest updates and developments, highlighting the ongoing efforts of our Executive team to support and advance the field of hip surgery. We are excited to announce the upcoming BHS/AHS UK travelling fellowship, a prestigious biennial event that will see surgeons from both the USA and the UK visiting top centres across the country this September. This fellowship not only fosters international collaboration but also provides a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange and professional development.

Looking ahead to the BOA Congress, we are honored to have Professor Robert Trousdale deliver this year’s Charnley Lecture. Professor Trousdale’s extensive contributions to hip surgery, particularly in hip dysplasia and complex arthroplasty, promise to make his lecture a highlight of the event.

Our educational initiatives continue to thrive, with the Global Reach webinar series, in partnership with the Asian Pacific Hip Society, drawing significant interest. The recent session on complex cases has already been viewed over 2,000 times. In addition, our Basic Hip Principles course for trainees remains in high demand, with upcoming sessions scheduled in Glasgow and Birmingham.

We are also excited to introduce “The Legends,” a new podcast series that pays tribute to the individual surgeons who have made extraordinary contributions to hip surgery. The first episode, featuring an interview with Colin Howie, offers a deep dive into the career and legacy of this esteemed consultant orthopaedic surgeon.

In response to the financial challenges faced by some members, we are proud to launch the BHS Benevolent Fund. This initiative aims to provide financial assistance for those who may struggle with meeting membership fees or attending essential meetings, ensuring that all our members can continue to participate fully in the society’s activities.

Don’t miss our feature on Naomi Gibbs, our dedicated Culture & Diversity Chair, who continues to lead efforts to make hip surgery more inclusive and supportive for both practitioners and patients alike.
