President’s Monthly Update – May 2023

Dear Members,

I have the great pleasure of sharing some of the recent activities of the BHS Society as your new President. Vikas Khanduja as your immediate past President has taken the BHS society to unparalleled heights in terms of research, teaching and training, diversity of the membership and size of the scientific meeting and I hope to maintain this momentum. We have just returned from our executive away Day in Belfast on the 5th May. An opportunity to discuss plans in details, we have come up with some hopefully useful concepts for the following year and also had an opportunity inspect the venue for the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) next year 2024.

Welcome to Samantha Hook as our new member at large who will continue to help with running of the numerous BHS fellowships available. Also, congratulations to Ajay Malviya as our new treasurer, Tony Andrade as our new non-arthroplasty representative, Petros Boscainos and Syed Ahmed joining the professional affairs committee and of course Matt Wilson as the new vice President.

In the Culture & Diversity team Sam Jain has stepped down and we acknowledge and thank him for his contribution. However, the team has been expanded with the addition of Bonita Tsang, Elizabeth Smith, Hani Abdul-Jabar, Hussain Kazi and Khalid Mailik-Tabassam who we welcome.

As a separate issue Patient Safety (Insight) at NHS England has been in contact regarding the use hydrogen peroxide being used during hip surgery. A recent review of the use of hydrogen peroxide in the Bone Joint Journal concluded there is a lack of robust clinical evidence to justify quantify its use in primary elective hip arthroplasty.

Best Wishes,

R M Dominic Meek
