Hip Surgery Fellowships in the United Kingdom

Fellowship training is intended to provide additional experience to aspiring hip specialists following the award of CCT. The British Hip Society believes that for a fellowship to be of greatest value, training must be well-organised and focussed on the needs of the individual, providing them with experience including outpatient management, surgical experience, research and personal development. The BHS considers the standards listed below should apply to a post CCT fellowship:

BHS TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS

1.

The fellowship should be advertised nationally and appointed by formal application and competitive interview.

2.

The fellowship should have named educational supervisors.

3.

Outpatient Experience

a.  Essential standard

At least one clinic per week

Access to consultant advice on patient management

b.  Desirable standard teaching

Consultant clinics run concurrently to facilitate and decision-making

4.

Theatre Experience

a.  Essential standard

At least three sessions of hip surgery per week

Named consultant responsible for every list

Exposure to mixed elective and trauma hip surgery

Participation in a regular multidisciplinary team meeting

b.  Desirable standard teaching

Consultant clinics run concurrently to facilitate and decision-making

5.

Research Experience

a.  Essential standard

One paid session per week for research

Fellowship supervising consultants actively involved in
research

b.  Desirable standard teaching

Attendance at regular multidisciplinary research meetings

Fellowship research presented at National / International meeting

Fellowship research published in peer-reviewed journal

6.

Personal Development

a.  Essential standard

i. Study leave allowance for time and budget

ii. Clear PDP aims should be agreed at the start of the fellowship

iii. Fellows should undergo formal appraisal at the end of the fellowship

b.  Desirable standard teaching
